Thank a Healthcare Hero for Thanksgiving

For Thanksgiving this year, reach out to the Healthcare workers you know with a card, email or text, and thank them for caring for your community everyday, but especially during COVID-19. Here is a card we created you can print and fill out to show your appreciation! Below is a prayer for all Healthcare Workers:

Blessings for all of the healthcare workers.

We ask for blessings for all of the healthcare workers around the world. Please bless them with the rest they need, time for nutritious meals and good ways to relax and de-stress. Lift their spirits. Help them remember that they are not only saving lives but also saving our spirits by displaying selfless compassion and courage.

We pray for blessings on the families of all of our healthcare workers. Bless them with good health and protection from disease. Provide for all their needs. Comfort them in their times of worry. Be present with them when they feel lonely, isolated and scared. Encourage and hold them up with faith and hope.

We bless every employee with gratefulness and thanksgiving for their service to our community. We ask for blessings on each employee that they may be given the grace to cure sometimes, heal often and comfort and be comforted always.

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well”

Fordham COVID Memorial

On Friday, November 6th on the Keating Steps at Rose Hill and Thursday, November 12th on the Outdoor Plaza at Lincoln Center the Fordham community joined together for an interfaith candle lighting & prayer service to honor and recognize those adversely impacted by COVID-19. At Lincoln Center, Campus Ministry partnered with United Student Government (USG), Muslim Student Association (MSA), and Christian Lighthouse Fellowship (CLF). We give thanks to them in aiding our efforts to commemorate those affected by the pandemic.

Our community remembers all members of the Fordham Family lost this year, particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and prays for healing of body, mind, and spirit for all of the sick and grieving. We as well reflect on the deep impact the pandemic has had on our New York City community, and more specifically our Bronx community. We keep them in our prayers to heal as a community and become stronger together through the process.

Join our Fordham community to pray for remembrance and healing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recordings of our Interfaith Prayer Services can be found here: Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.

Easter Season: 5/3-5/12 Online Programming

To our Beloved Community,

When you come to the door of my apartment in McMahon Hall at Lincoln Center where I and  sixteen students have been locked down during the pandemic, you will see the picture of a Ghanaian woman holding a calabash with the words ‘Akwaaba’ printed above the picture. Akwaaba is an important expression in Ghanaian custom which symbolizes acceptance, friendliness and cooperation.  ‘Akwaaba,’ which simply means welcome, in some Akan dialects, has become a symbol for expressing hospitality, especially to foreign guests.  The vessel she holds will be filled with water or a cold drink which is offered to a visitor whose journey may have been long and difficult.  The water becomes a refreshing reminder of friendship and hospitality to one who has made a long and difficult trip.

As we come to the end of the academic year, we know that this year’s journey has been a difficult one.  The road has been rough and the destination uncertain.  Given the circumstances with the coronavirus pandemic, we have had to face being sequestered at home, not being able to get to the university, online classes, zoom, and a suffering that has been forced on us by the limitation of movement.

As difficult as the current circumstance has been, I see a blessing in disguise in the pandemic we have had to face this past year.

As you know from your Jesuit formation at Fordham, gratitude is an essential element of Jesuit education.  Embracing gratitude in the face of adversity is a virtue that requires a heart open to the Divine and ultimately will make us stronger in facing the challenges of life.

Like you, I am uncertain about what the future will hold for the next academic year or for me personally.  But in the Jesuit tradition I am grateful.  I am grateful that I have been given the time to slow down, rather than running all over the place for things that are not always important.  Secondly, I am grateful that I have been given a deeper call to conversion.  These last few weeks have been a time for me to reach down deeper and examine my own relationship with God

In his Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius writes: “Give thanks to God our Lord for the benefits received.” God gives the benefits. God gives us family and goodness and love. So when I give thanks for the difficulties and the people in my life for the gifts we share, I am also giving thanks to God who makes all things possible.  Akwaaba!

Fr. George Quickley, S.J.

HAPPY LAST WEEK OF CLASSES!

To our Beloved Community,

As we head towards finals and the end of the school year, we have all been challenged to be flexible, to stretch, and grow in surprising ways. I have been inspired by the countless examples of communities and groups coming together to support each other in new and virtual ways during this time of social distancing. I am thankful for ways to connect with all in my community near and far.

My neighborhood has been participating in the daily 7PM cheer for essential workers. I am thankful for my neighbor, a man I have never met in person, who now leads us every day in that cheer from his top floor apartment across the street by ringing his cowbell at exactly 6:59. I am thankful for the creative activities our human community is putting together over Zoom, Facetime, and other platforms.

It has been so very heartening to see the power of the human spirit hard at work with the God who labors to create a new heaven and a new earth. Truly, the Lord is Risen!

Easter Season begins 4/9/20

Easter Season at Fordham

To our Beloved Fordham Students and Community:

We are entering into the holiest days of the Church calendar: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. These days are the bedrock for Christian faith, on which all else hinges. As the Church celebrates virtually these holy events, Jewish communities will be observing Passover, which recalls the liberation from slavery of the Jewish peoples.

Let us enter into these holy days, mindful of the gift and call of our Faiths – that we are called into freedom and light! Know that all of us in Campus Ministry will be holding you in our hearts and our prayers as you journey through these holy days. May you and your families be safe, be healthy, and be blessed with peace.
